We did an interview with West Virginia University, who was last year’s Shorty Award winner for best #BNCollege, which honors the Barnes & Noble College campus that most effectively uses social media to drive campus engagement with students, faculty and the entire campus community.
What has West Virginia executed across social media in the last year?
During Commencement, we used #wvugrad on Instagram and Twitter to encourage graduating students and alumni to share their WVU experiences. We welcomed a new class of students using the hashtag #wvu17 – not only for practical information about Welcome Week, but also to encourage current students and alumni to offer advice and help getting acclimated to campus. Over the holidays, we gave our followers “Simple Social Gifts” – ring tones, smartphone and desktop backgrounds, WVU-themed crafts, and a version of the famous “Flying WV” cookie recipe – to say thanks for another tremendous year.

Congratulations to Diane Vaccaro, Kmart Apparel’s Chief Marketing Officer, on becoming the newest member of the Shorty Awards Real-Time Academy of Short Form Arts & Sciences.
Diane Vaccaro is the CMO of Kmart Apparel. She enjoyed some notoriety this year with her greenlight of Kmart’s #showyourjoe spot; but she has had a long (read really long!) history of notoriety with key notables including the uncooked turkey incident of Thanksgiving ’99; house arrest at the Beijing airport hotel for failure to produce papers in 2001 and her failed gelato and dessert bar of 2006 (though not for lack of good reviews!).
Diane is also a longtime apparel industry expert with stints along the way at Liz Claiborne, Calvin Klein, Levi’s and Donna Karan. She is a risk taker (obviously!) who works everyday on transforming marketing at a big box discounter.
